Call for Papers for the Dossier: Music, Audiovisual Media, and Affects in the Burnout Society

2026-01-23

This dossier aims to bring together critical reflections and interdisciplinary research on the role of music and sound in media, especially in contemporary audiovisual contexts, taking as its conceptual axis the notion of the Burnout Society, as formulated by Byung-Chul Han. It seeks to investigate how multimedia environments reflect and problematize contemporary impasses, such as the perceived acceleration of time, the aestheticization of productivity, and the culture of performance and positivity. We are also interested in understanding whether classical audiovisual genres remain capable of addressing the anxieties of the present or whether new narrative and sonic forms have emerged to express the complexity of a world saturated with stimuli. In this context, music and sound are not mere adornments, but central elements of an intersemiotic system that articulates poetics, politics, and subjectivity.

Submissions should address one or more of the following thematic axes:

Axis 1 — Music, Sound, and Audiovisual Narratives in the Twenty-First Century

Axis 2 — Performance and the Culture of Performance in Music and Audiovisual Media

Axis 3 — Music, Emotion, and Subjectivity in the Burnout Society

Axis 4 — Soundscapes and Sensory Saturation

Axis 5 — Digital Platforms, Attention, and Sonic Practices of Resistance

Axis 6 — Music and Genre in Audiovisual Media
